Overview
Some thirty-five kilometres east of Bali is a dazzling group of islands known a Lesser Sundas or Nusa Tenggara. The main Island is Lombok which has become one of the most popular tourism icon. Lombok offers a blend of beauty of its flora and fauna as well as its unique culture which is strongly influenced by Bali. The communities of different religions live in harmony.
The island’s exceptional charm also lies in the traditional skills that create collections of pottery, songket and ikat weaving done by traditional methods. Climbing Mt. Rinjani and taking in the view of Segarankan crater lake near the summit is the ultimate Lombok experience. The big breaks on the southern coast of Lombok are a magnet for surfers. Mataram, Lombok’s capital is a good spot for day trips to the surrounding areas and the nearby Senggigi is superbly positioned along a stretch of sweeping bays.
Lying between West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tanggara is the Komodo Islands. Along with Rinca and Padar, one of the three larger islands and 26 islets that form the World Heritage-listed, Komodo National Park, a veritable wonder of nature best known as the natural habitat of the legendary Komodo Dragon, the planet’s largest lizard species – males can measure up to 3 m (10 ft) in length and weigh up to 90 kg (200 lb) – that has roamed the region for more than 900,000 years. Komodo Island tours not only offer the opportunity for thrilling encounters with these elusive, scaly, fork-tongued dragons, but with their prey too, like the Timor deer, wild boar and water buffalo, as well as the chance to witness the sunset spectacle on Kalong Island as the resident colony of giant ‘flying fox’ bats fly away from their mangrove roosts to feed in their thousands.
Few areas in Asia can match the cultural and natural diversity of Indonesia’s Lesser Sunda Islands and the majestic Komodo National Park. Bali & Komodo Island adventure is an exploration of some of the most beautiful places in Indonesia
