Overview

Medan is a gateway to North Sumatra’s rich tourism destinations. The province has one of the biggest lakes in the world, Toba Lake, at its navel. The continuous mountain of Bukit Barisan guards the province on the west side, providing home for thick, tropical jungles and lush vegetations. Down from the western mountains towards the beaches of the east; you will find mountain streams, strong rivers, and gorgeous waterfalls.

Medan itself has got to offer many attractions within the city. Medan multi-cultural society is reflected in architecture, cuisines, dress and many more. Several ethnic groups live in Medan and other towns of North Sumatra, the largest of these being of Chinese and Indian descent.

About 176 km from Medan and  4 hour drive is Lake Toba, Largest lake in Southeast Asia, with a surface area of about 1,145 square kilometers. Over 450 meters deep, it is the deepest lake in the world. The town of Parapat is the main tourist resort and lies on the shores of the lake. The Batak Toba and Batak Simalungun peoples of Parapat are cheerful, easy-going people, known for their lively and sentimental love songs. ln Parapat, there are facilities for swimming, waterskiing, motor boating, canoeing, fishing and golf. The climate is cool and dry, and is an ideal place to unwind. There is a wide selection of hotels, bungalows, villas and guesthouses.
